Published by Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover and printed by Ives-Sillman in New Haven. The print surface untouched and in excellent condition. Josef Albers was born on March 19, 1888 in Bottrop, Germany. He was an influential painter, graphic artist, art theorist and educator who is best known for his contributions to abstract art and his color studies. After training as a primary school teacher and working as a glass painter, Albers studied at the renowned Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920, where he later became a teacher himself. There he taught in the workshops for glass painting and furniture construction, among other things. Following the closure of the Bauhaus by the National Socialists, Albers emigrated to the USA in 1933. He took up a professorship at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where he played a central role in the development of modern art education. In 1950, he became head of the Department of Design at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Albers is best known for his "Homage to the Square" series, which he began in 1950 and continued until his death. These works explore the interaction of colors and the perception of space and depth. In addition to his artistic work, he published the influential book "Interaction of Color" in 1963, which is still considered a standard work of color theory today. Josef Albers died on March 25, 1976 in New Haven, Connecticut, leaving behind a significant artistic and theoretical legacy that has had a lasting impact on modern art. Provenance: Private property Bavaria, loan Landesmuseum Darmstadt Elvira Bach was born on June 22, 1951 in Neuenhain, Hesse. She is one of the best-known German artists and an important representative of the so-called "Neue Wilde", an art movement that emerged in the 1980s and is characterized by expressive, colour-intensive painting. Between 1967 and 1970, she attended the Staatliche Glasfachschule Hadamar before moving to Berlin in 1972 to study painting at the Hochschule der Künste (now the Universität der Künste). There she studied under Hann Trier, among others. In 1982, she spent several months as "Artist in Residence" in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which had a lasting influence on her artistic development. Bach is best known for her intensely coloured, stylized self-portraits, which often focus on female strength and self-confidence. Her works are internationally recognized and have been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide. The work "German-Dominican Friendship" from 1982 shows Elvira Bach's characteristic expressive painting style. At the center are two stylized figures whose contrasting colours - a deep blue and a delicate pink - emphasize a symbolic connection and contrast. The figures are closely embraced, conveying intimacy and closeness, while the background in strong red and white emphasizes the dynamism of the composition. In the lower part of the picture, three jubilant snowmen can be seen, one of whom is even standing on his head. The passionate dance of the figures lends the pictorial space a lively and warm atmosphere, which is emphasized by the melting, very pronounced noses of the snowmen. The powerful brushwork and reduced formal language make the work an impressive example of Bach's exploration of identity, relationships and cultural encounters. The artwork was part of the important exhibition and presentation of the "Deep Views" collection at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt in the mid-1980s. It has been on permanent loan there since then and is now being offered on the auction market for the first time.

Werner Büttner, born on March 15, 1954 in Jena, is an important German painter and representative of the so-called "Neue Wilde". After being born in the GDR, he moved to the Federal Republic of Germany with his family in 1960. He spent his youth in Munich and Berlin. From 1974, he studied law at the Free University of Berlin, but later decided to devote himself to art. In the late 1970s, Büttner moved to Hamburg, where, together with artists such as Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen, he had a significant influence on the German art scene of the 1980s. His works are characterized by a critical examination of social issues and are often infused with irony and sarcasm. Büttner became known for his provocative and socially critical works, which were directed against the conventions of the art world. Werner Büttner has been Professor of Painting at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg since 1989. In addition to his teaching activities, he continues to be active as an artist and has held numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. In 2011, he was awarded the Hans Platschek Prize for Art and Writing, which underlines his importance as an artist and thinker. Werner Büttner lives and works in Hamburg and Geesthacht. Provenance: Private property Bavaria Jiří Georg Dokoupil was born on June 3, 1954 in Krnov, Czechoslovakia. After the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968, he fled to Germany with his family. From 1976 to 1978, he studied at the art academies in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main and at the Cooper Union in New York, where he studied under the German conceptual artist Hans Haacke, among others. In 1979, together with artists such as Walter Dahn and Hans Peter Adamski, Dokoupil founded the Mülheimer Freiheit group, which is associated with the neo-expressive style of the Neue Wilde. His work is characterized by a remarkable stylistic diversity; he developed over 100 different techniques, including the use of whips, car tires and soap bubbles to apply paint. Dokoupil now lives and works in cities such as Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, Plovdiv, Dakar and Las Palmas. HARTWIG EBERSBACH (born 1940 in Zwickau, active in Leipzig) Bell , 1989 Oil and paint tubes on hardboard, 121.5 x 79 cm, artist's border, monogrammed and dated (19)89 top left, painted on both sides, artist's label with title and signature affixed to the reverse. Ebersbach was born in Zwickau in 1940 and studied painting under Bernhard Heisig at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig from 1959. He himself later led the experimental art course there, which he had founded, and traveled the world from 1988. At the beginning of the 80s, he belonged to the experimental group 37,2, which sought new structural possibilities for the production and reception of art in order to redefine the function of art in society. His works are characterized by the expressive, informal style and thick application of paint. Hartwig Ebersbach belonged to the "expressive-passionate" group of the Leipzig School, with which he attracted international attention. The first major break in his work occurred during his studies, after he experienced a traumatic nocturnal vision in a dream. He then sought expressionist forms of expression in wild painting. The present work, which is exemplary for Ebersbach, is characterized by a seemingly disordered brushstroke and an application of paint that is heightened to the point of three-dimensionality. The characteristic tubes of paint are also incorporated into the picture surface. Contrary to the disorderly appearance of his paintings, Ebersbach worked with the utmost concentration and precision, painting like a man possessed for decades and producing numerous paintings. Ebersbach often caused offense in the GDR with his sometimes dark paintings, which tended towards the abstract. While he enjoyed success in West Germany, he remained an outsider in the East German art scene. Hartwig Ebersbach's work "Glocke" (Bell) is an impressive example of the expressive power of his work. With a dynamic, seemingly chaotic brushstroke and an impasto application of paint that extends to three-dimensionality, the work unfolds an intense physical presence. The incorporated tubes of paint, a characteristic element in Ebersbach's works, reinforce the materiality and lend the composition a haptic quality. The color palette, dominated by earthy tones and contrasting bright accents, creates a suspenseful atmosphere that oscillates between movement and stasis. ANSELM FEUERBACH (1829 Speyer - 1880 Venice) Portrait of a young woman Oil on canvas in oval, 70 x 58 cm, framed. Provenance: Estate of Willi Sitte (1921 - 2013), acquired from an Italian art dealer. Restored (2024), restoration report available. Feuerbach was born in Speyer on September 12, 1829. He was an important German painter of the 19th century and is considered one of the leading representatives of Neoclassicism in Germany. Feuerbach came from an educated family; his father was the well-known archaeologist Joseph Anselm Feuerbach, which gave him early access to classical themes and artistic influences. He began his artistic training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, but continued it in Munich and later in Antwerp. He finally moved to Paris, where he lived from 1851 to 1854 and studied the works of Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet. This period had a lasting influence on his style. Feuerbach later settled in Italy, where he studied classical art and Renaissance works intensively. His stays in Rome and Venice in particular had a decisive influence on his artistic development. Feuerbach's works are characterized by an idealized beauty and a clear, classical formal language. His best-known paintings include "The Banquet of Plato" and "Medea", which reflect his preference for mythological and historical themes. His works were often perceived as too intellectual and distanced by contemporary art critics, but later gained great recognition. In 1873, Feuerbach was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There, however, he found it difficult to assert himself against the emerging trends of Realism and Impressionism. After his time in Vienna, he retired to Venice, where he died on January 4, 1880 at the age of 50. Feuerbach's work became known posthumously through the efforts of his stepmother Henriette Feuerbach, who published his writings and letters and thus contributed to his later recognition. The present painting shows a sensitive portrait of a young woman, masterfully captured by Anselm Feuerbach. The depiction captivates with its subtle lighting, which gently models the sitter's face and emphasizes her lively charisma. Sighard Gille, born on February 25, 1941 in Eilenburg, is a renowned German painter, graphic artist and university lecturer who is closely associated with the Leipzig School. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (HGB) from 1965 to 1970 under important artists such as Bernhard Heisig and Wolfgang Mattheuer. After completing his studies, he continued his artistic career and has had a significant influence on the Leipzig art scene since the 1970s with his independent visual language. Gille became particularly well known for his monumental murals, including the famous ceiling painting in the Gewandhaus Leipzig. In addition to his artistic activities, he was also active as a teacher and influenced a new generation of artists. His works, which often illuminate social and everyday themes with a sensitive and ironic perspective, are represented in important collections and museums, including the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Gille's works are characterized by their painterly intensity and colourfulness, which convey an emotional depth. He is considered one of the leading representatives of contemporary German painting. The large-format painting "Fischzug Gülper-See" by Sighard Gille shows a dynamic and atmospherically dense scene that captures the moment of a catch of fish. The composition is dominated by expressive brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette that primarily includes shades of blue and green and impressively depicts the natural surroundings of the lake. MORITZ GÖTZE (born 1964 in Halle (Saale), works there) Lenin in Belgium , 2010 Oil on canvas, 120 x 80 cm, signed and dated lower left, titled on the reverse, signed and dated again. Moritz Götze is a well-known contemporary German artist known for his colorful and detailed works. Born into an artistic and cultural family - his father was the painter and graphic artist Lutz Götze, his mother the writer Christa Götze - his creative potential was fostered early on. After leaving school, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter before devoting himself entirely to art, although he did not follow a formal artistic training path but developed his style autodidactically and through collaboration with other artists. In the 1980s, Götze founded several bands and was active in the subculture of the GDR. After the fall of communism in 1989/90, he found his own artistic language, which is influenced by pop art, comics and the imagery of everyday culture. His works are characterized by bright colors, clear lines and an often humorous examination of historical and everyday themes. Götze uses a variety of techniques, including screen printing, painting and, above all, the art of enameling, in which he transfers modern motifs into a traditional technique. His works often draw on motifs from German history and culture and combine them with contemporary elements, giving his works a special depth and distinctive character. The painting "Lenin in Belgium" shows a stylized depiction of Vladimir Lenin standing in the midst of lush and symbolic vegetation. Lenin, dressed in a suit, stands upright and gazes into the distance, lending him a certain grandeur. The vegetation surrounding Lenin is dense and rich in detail. It consists of green leaves, vines and flowers that wind around him. Various symbolic elements are embedded in the midst of the plant work, such as skulls, reminiscent of transience and death, as well as symbols of revolution and communism, such as red stars and the hammer and sickle. The title "Lenin in Belgium" has a historical context, as Lenin actually spent some time in exile in Belgium. The picture establishes a link between his exile and his revolutionary activities.
